It has been popular ever since and can be found across the world, from Sydney’s eastern suburbs to New York’s upper east side. Timber also has a natural beauty that can’t be found in carpet or tiles. Every bit of timber is unique; the grain on one floorboard won’t be found on another. When considering parquetry, it can be laid in a multitude of intricate patterns, adding interest to the space. Timber flooring is beneficial to those that suffer from allergies or asthma as the surface can be easily and thoroughly cleaned, unlike carpet that can harbor allergens. CAN ANY TIMBER FLOOR BE SANDED? Most timber flooring can be restored by simply sanding and recoating. Almost any timber floor, except for laminate, can be sanded. Laminate can’t be sanded because it is not solid timber - rather, it is just an image of a floor glued to XDF. On the very rare occasion, we will encounter some solid timber floors that are beyond repair due to disease or have already been re-sanded and had too much timber taken off. HOW DO I EXTEND THE LIFE OF MY FLOOR? There are numerous simple steps you can take to keep your floor in pristine condition. Place mats at all entrances of the house – it reduces the possibility of grit coming into your home that could damage your floor. An even better idea is to remove your shoes around the house. It’s important to keep your floor clean, and the best way to do that is according to manufacturers instructions. Usually a static mop and vacuum will suffice. Avoid using steam mops or a mop and bucket as this will cause water damage. Make sure spills are cleaned up immediately. If you can, avoid allowing pets on the wooden floor as this is likely to cause scratches. HOW LONG AFTER YOU’VE FINISHED CAN I WALK ON MY FLOOR? Engineered floating floors can be enjoyed straight away. Site-finished floors such as solid strip flooring or parquetry that has been glued and lacquered, requires a drying time that is dependent on the local environmental conditions. Sometimes it can take a few days, whilst on other occasions it can take up to a week for the coating to become fully cured.
