Australia's major feedlots have extensive Wagyu feeding programs and contract farmers to breed and supply them with full blood and crossbred Wagyu feeder steers and heifers. Overseas countries are seeking to improve the quality of their cattle herds and develop Wagyu programs of their own to enable them to benefit from the high values attached to the higher grades of Wagyu meat. Consequently, this year has seen major injections of capital into Wagyu production in Australia, one individual has spent $45 million AUD on the acquisition of two very large pastoral properties, including their Wagyu herds. Both of these projects will involve the breeding of Wagyu cattle, grass feeding of the progen, feed-lotting, slaughter, boning out, packaging and export of chilled carcasses and boxed beef.
